Invented in the US some years ago - and then called ‘Cross Sums’ - the puzzle was introduced to Japan and is a huge phenomenon there (it's far more popular than Sudoku!). The craze is now spreading internationally thanks to the renewed interest that Sudoku has generated for puzzle games and has a new name: Kakuro.
