This useful handbook of Latvian weaving techniques covers all the basic weave types such as plain weave, twill and satin weave and their derivatives such as block weaves, textured weaves and combination weaves. Its aim is to present as many Latvian designs as possible using between four and eight shafts.

With each weave type examples of Latvian designs are given, starting with the simplest plain weave needing only two shafts to the most complex multi-shaft examples needing up to seventeen shafts. One chapter is devoted to the drawloom technique. An introductory chapter on drafting will be a help to weavers with its clear, straighforward instructions.

The hand book is based on weaving samples and notes collected by the author's mother over the last fifty years. Traditional Latvian weaving has been passed down from generation to generation along with its unique colour and design elements. Each region of Latvia is distinguished by its own particular national dress. These national dress fabrics can be woven in the traditional way or be an inspiration to handweavers for contemporary fabrics. The book also illustrates many designs suitable for practical projects.
