This is a gentle satire on the life of a single woman of traditional views living in the Australian suburbs.
Catherine Gray's life is thrown into turmoil by her elevation to the position of secretary of the local Naturalists Society. This brings her into close contact with society president Herbert Spade, whom she has long admired from afar. She decides to make him hers.
