Ellie hates her mother. What sort of mother would wear leopard skin and feathers on tuckshop duty? Not one Ellie would want to be associated with. It seems Ellie and her mother are different in every possible way. Ellie's mother is a materialist, Ellie an environmentalist, Ellie's mother loves to be the centre of attention while Ellie would rather just blend right in. Ellie's mother is loud while Ellie is quiet.
It wasn't always like this; when her father and her sister Jade still lived at home, things were balanced, they felt like a family. Now her father has remarried and Jade has disappeared, the house feels like a hollow space, filled only by Ellie's mother's rock music and the different men she brings home. Then Ellie meets Sun in her Tai Chi class. He is quiet, too, but with something wild inside. Like a leopard.
