Robert Gray is probably the most widely acclaimed Australian poet born since World War II, particularly if one takes into account his reception by the reading public as well as by prize committees and critics. His poetry has been praised for its striking visual quality, its
suppleness of rhythm, and its clarity.
One of the strongest influences behind these poetic talents is revealed by the selection of twenty five drawings included in this book. Such ''graphic poems '' as Gray considers them, have always been produced by him, alongside his written work, but not been seen
before. Their publication will give readers the chance to see how one discipline he practices has contributed crucially to the other.
Lineations takes the section of twenty one poems at the end of Gray's New and selected Poems and completes it with the addition of nineteen new works.
The entire book is now collected here, and is perhaps the most adventurous and versatile he has written.
