The pirate Long John Silver retired after an eventful sea-going life and settled on a fortified cliff in Madagascar, in 1742, to write his memoirs. The British Navy soon interrupts his literary efforts to take him back to England for trial; in the ensuing discussions the British Navy retires with only his memoirs on board, for delivery to Jim Hawkins at the Admiralty. Long John has fulfilled a different plan for himself. As for the memoirs - Robert Louis Stevenson clearly left all too much unsaid in Treasure Island: Larsson gives us Long John warts and all, and recounts his adventures at breakneck speed. Only a writer with Larsson's deep knowledge of eighteenth-century seafaring, a visceral love of Stevenson, and an admirable measure of cheek could bring off a narrative as electrifying, plausible and satisfying as Long John Silver.
