A terrific military action adventure with strong characters and authentic detail.
The British Harrier Squadron in Belize is still a well-known and potent symbol of our strategic role in the world. It has been well publicised in the past, but less publicised has been the fact that the aircraft have not actually been there for years. We can’t afford it. In fact, there are only a handful of British troops in Belize at any one time, doing some jungle training.
But the threat that the Brits are supposed to be averting is still absolutely clear: Guatemala claims Belize as its own, and has repeatedly stated its intention to take it back. Long Reach is the wonderfully exciting, totally gung-ho story of how the invasion is carried out - and repelled by that handful of Royal Marines and the emergency reinforcements that the Navy can get to them. Individual tales of heroism and action make for a sumptuously exciting novel.
