Everyone always told Stella Moon how lucky she was to have a famous dad.
She just wished he was more like everyone else's. And when her mum died, and he withdrew to his study and his allotment leaving Stella and her brother alone to mix cocktails with stolen Advocaat, play in rusty cars and exist for a whole week on Black Forest gateaux pilfered from the freezer, she didn't feel lucky at all.
Now in her thirties Stella has made sure her life couldn't be further from her chaotic upbringing, with a strict routine as a music teacher and a peaceful, tidy home. Until two noisy little girls move in next door.
At first, she feels besieged. The girls hound her, bearing sticky gifts of edible jewellery, and firing personal questions about her mum, her dad and her love-life. But it's their friendship that helps her to confront the truth about her own childhood and start living life to the full.
A beautifully written, moving and ultimately uplifting story about growing up, family secrets and allowing new people into your life.
