I know we bibliophiles say it often - “I just couldn't put this book down!” - but this was a new record for me. Not only did I blitz through Darkfever, I devoured the rest of the series in an embarrassingly short period of time, sitting up until all hours of the morning just to quench the desperate desire to know what happened next! From the first page of the first book, action, adventure and heart-pounding thrills will grip you and leave you constantly guessing. Although you may feel like a modern day Sherlock puzzling through the endless mysteries, there are a plethora of relentless shocks and surprises that will constantly keep you on your toes.
Let's rewind a little though... MacKayla “Mac” Lane is your average twenty two year old. She's a bit of a book worm, she loves music and she's always pretty in pink, without a care in the world. Then she receives the news that her sister, studying overseas in Dublin, has been violently murdered shortly after leaving Mac a troubling voice mail message and so begins the cataclysmic journey for vengeance. After travelling to the city that her sister loved, lived and died in, determined to comb through all of the evidence for herself, Mac stumbles head first into a raging war to procure an age old relic no matter the cost – a relic which her sister mentioned in her fateful voice mail, a relic which, of course, Mac feels she needs to find to answer all of her questions.
This series has everything you could ever want in a stellar paranormal read and more! Fantasy and reality are sandwiched together between a whole world of mayhem, forcing Mac to face her fears, confront her foes and change in ways that she (and you) never sees coming. The somewhat questionable allies she recruits on her mission breathe an extra spark into the novel, fuelling the fiery storyline further. There's also a tidbit of... er, well, let's not call it romance just yet... that will leave you frustrated and demanding recompense for all of the emotional investment you put in to it (Hang in there, I promise it's worth the wait!)
I loved every second of Mac's adventures, as irritating as some parts... and people... were, and I could easily re-read them over and over. This is perfect for anyone who loves an in-depth, multi-faceted plot line that unfolds gradually – sometimes gentle and sweet, other times with the sting of loss and heartache, but always with care and riveting detail. There really is a whole world inside these books and almost every nook and cranny is explored, leaving you utterly satisfied and fulfilled by the time you put down that very last book.
I could never, ever say that I have a singular favourite book (even if I broke my library down into categories and let each category have it's own winner, I'd still be hard pressed to call anything my unequivocal favourite!) I don't think anyone who falls head over heels with the written word could ever let their heart settle in just one place but Karen Marie Moning's Fever series could definitely come close.
