This absorbing book brings together the personal recollections of people who have lived, worked and witnessed many of the changes that have taken place in Maindenhead during the last century. Memories of the muffin man calling at the door, of blacksmiths and working farms, of doors which were never locked, are recalled with a prevailing sense of community and camaraderie, most evident in the memories of the Second World War and the disastrous floods of March 1947.
I remember my father working at the jam factory in Cordwallis Road. He was a stoker, he built up the fires. We knew he was making strawberry jam because the smell used to come across the garden and when fated came in he just smelt of strawberries!
Complemented by a hundred photographs taken from treasured family albums and archive material from the maidenhead Heritage Centre, Maidenhead Voices recalls the daily life of the local townspeople, whose experiences and reminiscences are recorded here in their own words.
