A Year on the Wild Side with a Stay-at-Home Dad.
This is a funny, tender - and sometimes horrified - look at a year spent being a stay-at-home dad with a newborn daughter.
The shock of the new - or newborn, that is - has been written about a number of times, usually from the mother's point of view, occasionally from the father's. What happens, though, when it logically makes more sense for your wife to go straight back to work (she makes more money), leaving you to master the various arts of changing vile nappies, pureeing food, and playing the part at "play dates" and mother's group. Is it too much for an XY chromosome to bear?
Tim Bryant's loving record of the first year of his daughter Lily's life shows that any red-blooded, footy-loving man can take on the role of full-time carer with flying colours. Describing moments that are joyous, sad, laugh-out-loud funny, and just damn painful (how about impaling the back of your head on the front door the moment your wife leaves on her first day back??), 'Man With A Pram' is a terrific insight into the heartwarming bonding that occurs between father and child.
PS What's a good way to learn Italian? Be the only dad in the playground with a lot of Italian nonas and bambini!
PPS What do you NOT want to do with a pencil if your baby is constipated? Best not go there.
