Two books in one volume: 'War Boy' and its sequel 'After The War Was Over'
In a most unusual war memory the artist and children's book illustrator Michael Foreman looks back on his own wartime childhood in a village on the Suffolk coast of England. This was no sanctuary from danger, however, for nearby Lowestoft was under frequent attack, and from the moment when a fire bomb exploded in his bedroom the young Foreman knew that his family was living in the front line.
'War Boy' will captivate readers of all ages with its authentic child's-eye-view of war. 'After The War Was Over' describes life in post-war Suffolk, beginning in the summer of 1945 when victory bonfires still burned and Empire pink covered the map.
Foreman recalls how bombsites became playgrounds, the coast a setting for boyhood games of cowboys and Indians, and he remembers the excitement of an early trip to London when the Palace guards were still in khaki wartime uniforms. Here is a memorable picture of life in the 1950s for children of today.
