Claude-Oscar Monet (1840 - 1926) was the longest lived of the Impressionists and the most relentlessly productive. The catalogue of his oeuvre runs to more than 2000 items, some of them canvases on a very large scale. Monet achieved an enormous reputation in his own lifetime - his sun-filled canvases of water-lilies, his famous garden at Giverny, and his shimmering haystacks remain some of the most popular paintings of all time. His work defines the central tenets of Impressionism - painting with unmixed colour, excluding black from the palette, and attempting to seize the instantaneous effects of nature - and he pushed them further than any other artist.
'Monet: Life and Works' follows his artistic career from a young painter exploring the traditions of landscape painting through to his final and magnificent canvases of water-lilies that herald the modern movement.
