'The landscape in the reserve is not like those I have already photographed. There is no dominating or unique feature; no horizon to define its boundaries, no gentle pastoral curves . . . Here space is layered. Lines of growth and shadow run over and through each other in spaces that are at once closed and infinite. To walk, sit and breathe in a space like this is good for you.'
On a solo trip to Western Australia in June 2000 Joyce Evans had a series of accidents which began when a young bull injured her, and led to injuries which severely limited her mobility. During her recovery she stayed at her cottage on the Balcombe estuary where she discovered that she could walk easily on the flat even surface of the boardwalk at the estuary reserve. She began to carry her camera and her walks through the reserve were extended gradually until she could manage roughly a kilometre.
"Although the reserve is 44 hectares, I told myself I could take it one kilometre at a time." These peaceful interludes with nature inspired her recovery and her artistic vision.
The photographs in 'Only One Kilometre' were taken during this period and are a new vision of the fragile ecology of the peninsula. With literary contributions by Pat Raison and Chris Wallace-Crabbe among others, this beautifully presented edition is a perfect gift for anyone interested in literature, nature, conservation, or the Mornington Peninsula and is a perfect souvenir for visitors to the region.
