The motifs, borders and trims in this book can be joined together to make articles of any size. Traditionally these motifs were used to make white knitted cotton bedspreads, but knitters who are less ambitious may prefer to make cot covers, shawls or even doll's wraps. The possibilities for soft furnishings and decorator items are limitless - cushion covers, blinds, wall hangings, lamp shades . . . The borders can be used as attractive edgings for larger items, and the trims to finish off smaller or more delicate articles.
The patterns are traditional - they have been collected from nineteenth century sources and the instructions have been updated. There are simple yet effective patterns for beginners, and patterns which get progressively more challenging for experienced knitters. Each pattern is clearly illustrated in black and white and there are colour photos of finished articles, including some antiques. Instructions with diagrams explain the stitches in lace knitting. A brief history of white cotton knitting traces the upsurge in popularity of this gentle craft.
