When Mrs Pargeter is asked by an elderly widow to return a large number of stolen paintings, she doesn't hesitate - for it's a point of honour to complete any of her late husband's unfinished business.
Unfortunately there are two spanners in the works. For as Mrs Pargeter recreates one of her husband's classic operations in order to honour her promise, she finds herself under the beady-eyed scrutiny of two policemen - both of whom are determined to make their mark.
