Ali Ismail is a refugee. In Afghanistan, the Taliban have murdered his father, and so Ali's uncle smuggles him out of the country to safety - to Australia. But instead of finding freedom, Ali is taken to a detention centre in the South Australian outback. For twelve long months, as he waits to find out whether he will be allowed to stay, Ali must endure the hardship and despair of mandatory detention.
