One April evening, during a dinner party she is hosting with her husband, Helen Glass slips unannounced from her home. Returning to the florist shop where she works, she meets an intruder and becomes the victim of a devastating act of violence. In France, they meet Reuben, an American playwright struggling with his own demons. He quickly befriends Helen and becomes her confidante.
