Ruth is cheerful and robust - a vicar's daughter with a normal upbringing. Her greatest friend is her cousin Victoria - dark and beautiful, an only child with a tragic past. From summer holidays by the sea, through school and university, they are as close as any sisters: Ruthie happy to give, and Vicky happy to take.
