In the year 2025 the Internet practically runs the world, and its virtual reality webwork has to be policed by Net Force to prevent terrorists from sabotaging it. But sometimes they need help. Which is where the Net Force Explorers come in, the young people's auxiliary for computer whiz-kids who have made it through a tough training programme.
Megan O'Malley knows that her buddy, Burt Kamen, is having difficulties at home, but when he unexpectedly disappears, she's relieved to hear he's at a shelter owned by 'Breathing Space' - a virtual refuge offering runaways a neutral space in which to talk with their families.
Until, that is, Burt excitedly tells her he has been recruited for a lucrative "new line of work" and must drop out of sight for a while. Megan begins to suspect that 'Breathing Space' is not the safe haven it seems and when she discovers that someone is stalking the margins of this protected space - someone who thinks these kids are disposable waste - she suddenly finds herself in a dangerous race to prevent Burt dropping out of sight for good.
