When two-year-old John Baron is rescued from war-torn France, he is unaware that the family he loves is not his own. Fleeing illness and death, the family emigrate from Yorkshire to rural Australia, living happily until John and the young woman he knows as his sister Samantha, are in their late teens.
A friend, Cashman, discovers the pair are not true siblings, but with his own interest in Samantha, keeps the secret to himself, fearing the choice she will make if the truth is known. Turbulence ensues, and then World War Two arrives, and will tear friends and family apart.
