Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years.

This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege. Alternating menace with overwhelming tenderness, Sally Rooney's second novel breathes fiction with new life.

If you missed the hit TV series based on this book, I recommend reading it immediately and then rushing to go catch the show. Beautiful, heartbreaking, funny and sexy, Normal People is a masterpiece from an amazing and promising new Irish author. Prepare to fall in love! - Rebecca (QBD)

I'm not ordinarily a fiction reader but I concede that I found this an amazingly compelling read from the get-go! This is a story of painfully self-conscious young love and the universal vulnerability we all experience along with those intense emotions (don't we?!) Normal People is utterly deserving of its many awards, but beware, it's not for the emotionally faint-hearted... - Melinda (QBD)

This book is a fantastic work of contemporary fiction that highlighs the internal complexities and relationship struggles many millennials face. This book will make you laugh, cry, think hard, reflect and possibly throw against a wall in a furious age. I am yet to read a stand alone book of contemporary fiction that comes close to this phenominal novel. - Katrina (QBD)

Whilst this is a love story, it is by no means a romance. Sally Rooney pushed boundaries with her debut novel "Conversations with Friends" and has continued with this, along with her unique and captivating storytelling, with the award-winning "Normal People". It follows two people with an unlikely relationship from high school through to adulthood, and makes you question who really is "normal". - Kayla (QBD)
