Older men, it seems, are reluctant to talk about the significant things in their lives. Yet, once asked, they approach such discussion with energy and remarkable insight.
Jack Zinn talked to older men - his counterparts - about the issues they identified as important: family relationships, friendships and changing life circumstances. In this book, men speak with clarity, passion and humour.
To many, it seems that as men age, they become invisible and silent. Yet for families, the daily issues faced by their fathers, partners or brothers are of real concern. In this book, older men present valuable insights into their lives, in areas such as work, retirement, family relationships, the impact of relocation, deteriorating health, sexuality, spirituality, widowerhood, loneliness and depression.
To write this book, the author called for contributions, formed focus groups of older men and couples, and asked them to tell him about their lives. Letters flooded in, words poured forth as these men seized the opportunity to communicate how they felt about significant things in their lives.
