On the first evening of Hanukkah, the child's father takes out the box of menorahs and dreidels. The child says the Hanukkah blessings and kindles one candle with the helper candle. The parents tell the children of the time long ago when Assyrians put out the eternal light of the great menorah in the Holy Temple. Each night another candle is lit along with other holiday activities: making pieces for a quilt, cooking potato latkes, making and giving presents, spinning the dreidel, and singing and dancing. Warm family and spiritual values are reflected in the text and in Hall's glowing paintings.
