Born to an Indian father and an English mother, Jamila Gavin grew up in two different worlds.
In India, she lived in a palace built for a prince, and learned to steal sugar cane and suck mangoes. England brought chillblains, air-raids and a passion for cowboy films. In between were unforgettable journeys, by bullock cart and tonga, aboard crowded trains and vast ocean liners.
