Jessie Smith's hope of a blissful married life is dashed when her husband Tom is called up for army training. She had been looking forward to living with Tom and baby Billy in their small terraced house in Bethnal Green, even though Tom's irresponsible behaviour sometimes borders on the downright criminal. But there is more to fear - the horror of a new world war.
When Tom is sent abroad, Jessie is left to cope with the baby alone when the Blitz on the East End begins and the bombs fall on Bethnal Green. Her twin, Hannah, has been recruited to the secret establishment Station X at Bletchley Park. Immersed in her work decoding German messages, Hannah has no idea of Jessie's desperation. And when Tom does a runner and goes AWOL, things get rapidly worse. Jessie will need all her strength to survive . . .
