Charlie Carver would normally prefer to stick hot chilli peppers up his nose and slide down a slippery dip in the middle of summer with no pants on than to say "sorry" to anyone.
But when he tries to apologise to his teacher and friend, Ms Carol DeLaine, he lands in the darkest cell of the abandoned Overhill Asylum for the Insane where he is forced to confront his deepest fears and feelings - alone.
Charlie gets tangled up in a plot which threatens Carol's life and her passion - the restoration of the old hospital. And with the help of a police officer and the meanest cat in the world, they confront a powerful, corrupt businessman and his minder, a steroid pumped, off-the-planet karate expert with a blood lust.
