The Knights of St John.
The order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem is the most long-lived of the great military orders of knighthood. Ernle Bradford is not only a great scholar of the Mediterranean, but also a master storyteller. He describes the Order from its first beginnings in a hospice on the road to Jerusalem, the increase in its wealth, power and territory, its expulsions from Cyprus and Rhodes culminating in the Great Siege of Malta.
The Knights of St John were master mariners, navigators and exemplary builders of their time, and their work continues today in the sending of doctors and medical supplies to trouble-spots and the maintenance of hospitals throughout the world.
