Satirical, frank, full of sharp observations on human life, In a German Pension tackles a range of themes. Racial tensions between English and Germans surface in stories such as 'Germans at Meat', 'The Modern Soul' and 'Frau Fischer', while class inequalities are humorously on display in 'The Baron' and 'The Sister of the Baroness' in the reverential approach of the guests at the German pension towards the aristocrats in their midst. 'A Birthday' is an unflattering portrait of manhood as a husband feels threatened by his wife's confinement and in 'The Swing of the Pendulum', a man takes advantage of a young woman's extreme poverty.
Based on Katherine Mansfield's experiences in a Bavarian spa, the German Pension stories were written during the turbulent opening years of the twentieth century and reflect her own spirited response to the constraints imposed upon her by society.
