The Antiquary was Scott's favourite of his own novels and is the third in the Waverley series. It centres on a young man called Lovel who meets Jonathan Oldbuck, the loquacious old antiquary, on a trip to Scotland. Visiting Oldbuck at his home, Lovel is introduced to local landowner Sir Arthur Wardour and his daugher Isabella. Lovel's growing love for Isabella remains unrequited, for he has no wealth or title to offer. Then, in an extraordinary act of courage, he rescues father and daughter. But Sir Arthur must be saved once more before destiny can take its course. With its vivid drama and exuberant prose, The Antiquary confirms Scott's reputation as the great storyteller of modern Europe.
