A fascinating study of how young people see themselves. Supported by Arts Council England. In 2014, artist Trevor Appleson took to the streets of Birmingham with his portable studio, photographing young people as they shopped, partied, studied and hung-out. Inspired by the way identities are now curated online, Appleson worked with 60 subjects to create an 'archive' of found and commissioned material, exploring identity and experience as expansive, multimedia portraits. Portable Studio inverts the traditional idea of the studio portrait / street photograph - the 'snapshot' is now just the starting point of a fascinating insight into the many ways young people present themselves. Portable Studio is the first edition of a publication project by Trevor Appleson that sets out to document contemporary youth culture in cites across the globe. Future editions are currently being planned in Johannesburg, East Jerusalem, and Los Angeles. AUTHOR: Trevor Appleson has photographs in public and private collections. His previous books include Los Loss and Free Ground.
