For 102 days the lives of Shelter Now aid workers Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry lay in the hands of the Taliban. If they were found guilty of trying to spread Christianity in Afghanistan, they knew there was a possibility they could be put to death.
Confined to small cells in various prisons with four other Western aid workers, they endured discomforts and witnessed horrors of the sort they never imagined while undergraduates at their university in Texas.
They picked ants from their food and lice from their hair. Some days they heard bloodcurdling screams coming from adjacent cells; on other days they witnessed brutal beatings of women prisoners. After the US began bombing Taliban strongholds, there were nights when their prison walls shook.
This is the dramatic story of their ordeal and how their faith supported them in their time of darkness. They tell the story of their work in Afghanistan, their love for the people they served, their arrest, trial and imprisonment by the Taliban, and their rescue in the midst of war by US Special Forces.
Why did two middle class American women decide to leave the comforts of home in exchange for the opportunity to serve the disadvantaged? And how did their faith motivate them and sustain them through the events that followed?
