But for those birds living on an isolated stretch of Coromandel Peninsula survival rates are vastly improved thanks to this country's first community-led kiwi conservation project.
Over the last 20 years, Project Kiwi has become the 'poster child' of community conservation, controlling pests and predators that could harm vulnerable birds. Warwick Wilson is the man at the heart of this endeavour.
