Pyro Watson is a lover of pirates and all things to do with treasures and maps and tales of long ago and the sea. He is stranded with his Aunt Mor while his mother goes to nurse Grandma and his father is unable to take time away from work to look after the two children.
Pyro's alter ego, Simeon the Pirate Fighter, is called in to pass the long evenings and longer days. While Aunt Mor is teaching her newest beau, Mr Stig, to swim, Simeon spends time pacing out maps and fighting battles at sea. When Pyro meets Min and his four-legged mate, Becks, things begin to look up.
Life at the holiday camp becomes more interesting and then moves into downright dangerous as the local heroes, Plonker and his mates (the Worries), decide to claim territorial rights to the beach.
With knowledge gleaned from Simeon's adventures and measures taken to walk in Simeon's footsteps, Pyro and Min successfully defend their beach rights - and become good friends.
