'Quest for Gold' follows the careers of Australia's leading contenders questing for gold at the Sydney Olympics culminating in a whirlwind final chapter on their fortunes at the Games. The athletes are:
- Swimmers Ian Thorpe and Susie O'Neill both of whom crashed through several world records at the recent Australian swimming trials.
- Pole vaulter Emma George who has held the world record many times. Her recovery from injury is now complete and she is on track to peak in September.
- The Australian women's hockey team whose success in major tournaments with uncompromising coach Rick Charlesworth at the helm is unprecedented.
- Cyclist Shane Kelly, the "special" in Atlanta, whose foot slipped out of the pedal, determined to make amends this time.
- The story of Oarsome Foursome rowers James Tomkins, Drew Ginn, Mike McKay and Nick Green and their reconfigurations into pairs and membership of the eight for Sydney.
- Australian women triathletes Michellie Jones Emma Carney, Joanne King, Jackie Gallagher, Loretta Harrop have all been world champions while Nicole Hackett has been Junior World champion.
- Lars Kleppich our windsailing champion who for the last two years has been unbeaten on Sydney Harbour in international events.
