Replacement and Transplant of the Larynx and Trachea

The most significant technical breakthrough in tissue reconstruction came in 1902 when Alexis Carrel reported on a method of blood vessel anastomosis, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1912. The application of microvascular surgery with blood supply restoration has resulted in revolutionary advances in tissue auto- and allotransplantation. Advances in airway reconstruction and transplantation have also arisen from microvascular surgery, which enables the use of wellvascularised tissues that can withstand the difficult environment of the airway tract. Replacement and Transplantation of Larynx and Trachea emphasises the key role of blood supply restoration. Both the medical artwork and the artist's interpretation visualise the unique structural and vascular morphology of the central airways. Let us hope that this book contributes to better reconstruction of the laryngotracheal airway and to the rigorous inclusion of the 'blood supply restoration' factor in future research into laryngotracheal reconstruction and transplantation.
