Although parts of the story will twist your heart, it's still overall joyous, it's unpretentious, direct and very friendly to a reader: the story of a journey that remains hopeful to the very end.
'Right As Rain' commences in the New Zealand of the 1950s and tells the story of Lottie's roller-coaster life as an immigrant in a new country whose language and customs are unfamiliar. She faces practical and emotional hardships in her marriage as she raises her children and tries to cope with a partner whose values are different from her own. As her children grow up, Lottie finally faces up to the reality of her marriage, the value of friendship and the truth of where she really belongs.
'Right As Rain' tells us a great deal about the condition of the Dutch community as the settled in great numbers in Australia and New Zealand in the 1950s and leaves us all with both a sense of hope and history.
