A Japanese legend holds that if a person who is ill makes a thousand paper cranes, the gods will grant that person's wish to be well again. This is the story of Sadako, who developed leukaemia, the atom-bomb disease, when she was twelve and of her brave and moving struggle against the illness.
Japanese children were inspired to subscribe to a statue of Sadako which stands in Hiroshima Peace Park. The children's wish is engraved at its base: "This is our cry, this is our prayer. Peace in the world."
