Safeguarding Children and Schools

Safeguarding Children and Schools explains ways in which schools contribute to keeping children safe from harm and promoting their welfare. It follows the Government guidelines Every Child Matters: Change for Children (DfES, 2004), which requires schools to be more proactive and to take responsibility for protecting and safeguarding children. The contributors, who are all experts in the field of child protection, put the task which schools face in the context of relevant research and offer examples of successful implementation. Areas discussed include the roles of local education authority services and schools in child protection, children who abuse other children, children and internet safety, and training school staff to safeguard children. At a time when expectations of the role of schools are evolving, teachers, managers, and social care professionals are anxious for the guidance and support which this book provides.

Brigid Daniel is Professor in Child Care and Protection at the Department of Social Work at the University of Dundee. She is co-author of several textbooks and practice resources on child care and protection. She was a member of the multi-disciplinary team that carried out a national ministerial review of child protection practice in Scotland.
