The gentle retelling of the text by Julius Lester, and illustrations by Jerry Pinkney, were based not only on the original text and illustrations of Helen Bannerman, who wrote Little Black Sambo in 1899, but on the many subsequent versions they discovered in museums, galleries and bookstores.
