History, they say is written by the victors, and to date that has certainly been true of the Second World War. Although German authors have published texts in their own country, few have reached the rest of the world. Those that do exist were generally written by those in positions of authority, rather than the soldiers, sailors or airmen who fought in the front line.
In the course of making the TV series 'Servants Of Evil', Bob Carruthers and Cromwell Productions uncovered fascinating first-hand accounts from the ranks of the armed forces, men who went to war believing in the Reich and in victory, but who often became chastened and cynical in the face of what they had been led to believe were impossibilities: the fighting ability and determination of the Russians, the strength of the Royal Air Force, the defeat of the U-boats by improved radar technology, the might and remarkable manufacturing capabilities of the USA and, finally, the fall of Berlin.
