Conversations with Australian Jews
What is it like to be Jewish in Australia? Often it means living with a sense of dislocation, with families having come a great distance from Russia, South Africa, Asia, Egypt or the Middle East. It also means struggling with defining what it means to be Jewish today.
There is another defining factor: time. In 'Shades Of Belonging', Neer Korn has ordered his conversations with 28 Jewish people around three key periods: people born before or during the Second World War, the post-1945 generation, and those born since the social revolutions of the 1960s. Each generation brings its own perspective to being Jewish in Australia.
Despite their different approaches to being Jewish, each of the people featured in this book has something in common: a desire to create community, be part of Australian culture and to be Jewish.
