The acclaimed biographer of Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Ingrid Bergman and other stars profiles one of Hollywood's most colourful and celebrated actresses, Mae West.
Mae West was a sex symbol and a comedian whose one-liners were as clever as anyone's. She was the #1 box-office attraction in Hollywood for several years. And although she always played a type, she played it to perfection. The films for which she's known were all made between 1932 and 1940. She returned to the screen twice in the 1970s, by which time she had become a camp icon. She died in 1980 at age 87. Mae West is responsible for some of the most quoted lines in film history:
* 'Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?'
* 'When I'm good, I'm very good, but when I'm bad, I'm better.'
* 'Too much of a good thing is wonderful.'
