'She Walks in Beauty' is Caroline Kennedy's most personal collection of poems to date. In addition to each carefully selected piece, she will write an introduction to each section of the anthology which will let readers into her own life and highlight the joys and struggles that she and all women in middle age face.
At 52 and with two of her children in college and the third on his way, Caroline began to contemplate her life anew. What is it that defines us, how do we evolve and embrace the challenges of change, of aging. At times there is emptiness...even sadness and at other moments we feel inspired to greet our next phase, to try something new. The contentedness comes with feeling comfortable in our skins, gaining wisdom -- if not weight! -- and developing or discovering new aptitudes. The ups and downs of this time in a woman's life have been discussed, written about, analysed, and philosophized since the beginning of time. The poems will heal and offer humour and tremendous insights, and let us revel in the lyrical, pure joy of poetry.
The collection will include works by Elizabeth Bishop, Emily Dickinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dorothy Parker, Joy Harjo, Queen Elizabeth I, Kay Ryan, Lucille Clifton, Rita Dove, Nikki Giovanni, Rainier Mara Rilke, Wallace Stevens, Anne Bradstreet, Margaret Atwood, W.B. Yeats, and many more.
