Myer is a household name Australia-wide but little is known about Sidney Myer, the man behind this retail empire. Sidney Myer migrated to Australia in 1899, largely to escape the persecution he faced as a jew in Russia. He spent his first years in Australia as a pedlar in country Victoria, before establishing the first Myer store, with his brother Elcon, in Bendigo. Yet he also had a life beyond Australia.
For over a decade he resided in America and at one time seriously considered re-establishing his business there. In America he began a successful share portfolio which would make him a millionaire. But when his American dream turned sour, Myer returned to Australia to invest his energies in the flourishing Myer Emporium. His philanthropy towards his employees and the wider community also became legendary.
'Sidney Myer: A Life, A Legacy' tells the story of Sidney Myer, drawing on many never previously published records and sources. It attempts to depict in some depth a life of courage, conviction, great passion and fulfilment. Sidney Myer died suddenly at the age of fifty-six, his life's work unfinished. Yet his legacy remains. This book is a small tribute to his life and achievements.
