The exercise ball, also known as the Swiss, Fit, or Stability Ball, originally used in Europe during the 1960s for therapeutic purposes, has developed as a popular piece of exercise equipment. It has been found to improve body and movement awareness, as well as overall joint stability, posture and muscle balance. Using the ball adds a new dimension to more traditional exercise routines.
Since its development in the early 1900s by Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Method of exercise has become widely recognised as a means of achieving a stronger, leaner, more flexible body, and grater energy levels. Pilate engages the body, breath and mind.
Now, Jennifer Pohlman and Rodney Searle, who both have extensive training in the Pilates Method, have devised a unique set of exercises integrating the ball with movements based on Pilates principles. The combined exercise techniques reinforce the focus on the deep abdominal, back and pelvic muscles, to help create a strong central "core". These exercises are also of value in releasing tension from the muscles.
The authors provide clear explanations emphasising the importance of posture, breathing and fluid movement. The easy-to-follow text provides additional strategies to advance the program a your own ability and confidence improve.
In 'Simply Ball With Pilates Principles', the book, full-colour photographs with step-by-step instructions explain how to exercise effectively, to improve muscle tone and strength and to increase your energy. The exercises can easily be carried out at home. The book also includes an introduction to the philosophy and principles; of Pilate and an explanation of how using the exercise ball can improve your muscle endurance, coordination and reflexes.
