When someone accidentally sets fire to the Lundy's barn, Winnie is injured trying to get the animals to safety. Confined to the hospital for weeks, she must depend on Englisher Samuel Miller to keep her company. Samuel's family is part of Winnie's tight-knit Amish community, though he left several years ago to pursue a degree at the University and now teaches agriculture. Through their conversations, and Samuel's dedication to her recovery, a friendship forms. Could it be more? Not if Samuel stays in the outside world.
In the meantime, Winnie's brother Jonathan must come to terms with the loss of his barn, and the knowledge that someone in the community is responsible. Will he be able to forgive and move on or will bitterness eat away at his heart?
