After her mother's death, Eleni goes to Byron Bay to learning clowning at a famous workshop away from it all. It was her mother's last gift and a holiday she paid for. It's a way to develop her skills as a drama student, and to deal with the loss and the low self-esteem that she's struggled with for most of her life in Australia.
On her return, she and her father leave inner city Sydney, where difference is rarely a problem, and go to make a new start in a small mountain community. But it seems like Eleni is never going to fit in.
For a start her cultural heritage is Greek and Spanish, and this town is one of those refuges created by the Anglos who moved on when their inner city suburbs changed. And then there's her big fat black moustache. When she and her friends come up against small mindedness they call on their dramatic skills to help them deal with it.
But Eleni also realises the even in her bleakest moments, her life has been transformed by various kinds of magic, and more than once has been touched by angels. And she learns the truth of her mother's life, which she is now in a sense completing: her strength in the past and her determination to live triumphantly.
