Sky Sash So Blue

Susannah has a secret treasure-a beautiful sky blue sash. It's so lovely she hardly believe it's really hers. For Susannah is a slave. Now Susannah's big sister Sissy is getting married to a free black man. There may be no preacher and no wedding feast, but Susannah and her mother are determined that Sissy will have a wedding dress. They stitch together rags and patches collected from the Big House, and it's Susannah who finds the last piece of cloth they need. When Sissy's husband buys her freedom, Susannah thinks of a last-minute gift. She gives her sister her sky blue sash, to hold the two families together until the day when Susannah and her mother will also be free.
