Mrs Donaldson has found two ways of eking out her pension. The first makes use of her acting talents as she plays out medical scenarios as a "pretend patient" to test the diagnostic skills and patient interaction of doctors in training. The other, rather odder, is suggested to her by her lodgers when they find themselves unable to pay the rent one week.

Graham Forbes is a disappointment to his mother who thinks that if he must have a wife, he should have done better. And her own husband would be better if she were mourning him rather than living with him. But this is Alan Bennett, so no matter the importance of keeping up appearances, what is happening in the bedroom is altogether more startling, perhaps shocking, and ultimately much more honest about people's predilections.
